Usance Letter of Credit
A usance letter of credit is a documentary credit that allows payment to take place at a future maturity date rather than immediately at sight. In practical terms, it gives the buyer time to pay while still giving the seller a structured bank-backed payment mechanism. That makes it a common tool in import finance, commodity trade, and cross-border supply transactions where buyers need breathing room to sell inventory, process goods, or collect receivables before settlement.
If your company needs a usance letter of credit for a real trade transaction, Financely helps structure the request, prepare the file, and coordinate placement discussions through the proper channels. We work on executable transactions with real trade flow, real counterparties, and a credible source of repayment.
What A Usance LC Actually Does
Under a usance LC, the seller ships goods and presents the required documents under the terms of the credit, but payment is due at a later agreed tenor such as 30, 60, 90, 120, or more days after shipment or after presentation, depending on the structure. The main commercial point is simple: the supplier accepts deferred payment terms backed by the LC structure, while the buyer gains working capital time. That can be useful when the seller is comfortable with deferred settlement and the buyer needs a structured payment window.
Deferred Buyer Payment
The importer does not need to settle immediately at sight, which can help preserve liquidity during the shipment and sales cycle.
Structured Seller Protection
The exporter still receives a bank-mediated payment mechanism tied to the terms of the credit and compliant document presentation.
Why Clients Use Usance LCs
A usance LC is often used when open account terms feel too risky for the seller, but immediate payment is not practical for the buyer. It sits in that middle ground where both sides need a cleaner framework. Buyers use it to manage working capital. Sellers use it to avoid relying purely on unsecured payment promises. In the right transaction, it can support larger orders, repeated supply cycles, and cross-border trade where counterparty trust is still being built.
A usance LC is not the same as a UPAS LC. With a standard usance LC, the seller is generally paid at maturity unless the credit is separately discounted. With a UPAS LC, the seller is paid at sight while the buyer still pays later. That difference affects pricing, commercial expectations, and how the transaction is positioned.
Where Financely Fits
We help clients assess whether a usance LC is the right instrument, review the trade contract and shipment logic, identify documentation and bankability gaps, and prepare the request for serious consideration. That includes looking at the buyer and supplier profile, requested tenor, goods involved, country risk, documentary requirements, repayment timing, and whether the proposed structure fits the underlying trade. If the commercial logic is weak, the right move is to fix that before approaching the market.

Who This Is For
This service is for importers, distributors, traders, and operating companies with a genuine commercial transaction and a legitimate need for deferred payment support. It is not for fictional supplier chains, circular paper trades, or speculative requests with no serious underlying shipment. A usance LC works when the transaction is real, the documentation is credible, and the repayment timeline makes sense.
We do not guarantee issuance. Any usance LC request remains subject to bank underwriting, KYC and AML checks, sanctions screening, document quality, product and country review, counterparty review, and final approval by the issuing side. Best-efforts placement work is not the same as a guaranteed credit decision.

Financely acts as a transaction-led structuring and placement firm for commercial finance situations. We are not a deposit-taking bank, and we do not present usance LC issuance as automatic. Any regulated activity is handled through the appropriate licensed or regulated counterparties where required.
