Renewable Energy Financial Models That Survive Lender Credit Review
Most renewable energy projects that fail to raise debt do not fail on the technology, the site or the offtaker. They fail in the model. A lender opens the spreadsheet, finds hardcoded revenue, a single energy yield case and debt sized on a flat DSCR that ignores the PPA tail, and the file goes to the bottom of the pile.
Financely builds and reviews project finance models for solar, wind, battery storage and hybrid projects so that the numbers a sponsor presents are the numbers a credit committee can approve. This article explains what lenders test in a renewable energy model, where developer models usually break, and how our modelling engagement works.

Why the model decides how much debt you get
In non-recourse project finance, the lender has no balance sheet to fall back on. The only source of repayment is the cash the asset produces, so the financial model is the credit case. Debt quantum, tenor, pricing, reserve accounts and covenants are all outputs of the model, not inputs negotiated around it.
That means two identical solar plants can raise very different amounts of senior debt depending on how the revenue is contracted, how downside cases are run and how the repayment profile is sculpted. A well-built model does not inflate a project. It shows the maximum debt the project can carry under the lender's own assumptions, which is usually more than a sponsor's rough sizing suggests and always more defensible.
What lenders test in a renewable energy model
Every credit team runs its own checks, but the core questions are consistent across commercial banks, development finance institutions and private credit funds active in project finance.
Revenue and energy yield
Lenders size on a downside production case, typically P90 one-year or P99, not the P50 in the developer's pitch. They want an independent yield assessment feeding the model, clear separation of contracted and merchant revenue, and realistic curtailment, availability and degradation assumptions.
Debt sizing and sculpting
Senior debt is sized against a target DSCR under the lender's sizing case, with repayments sculpted to cash flow and the tenor kept inside the PPA term plus any accepted tail. The model must solve for debt quantum, report minimum and average DSCR, LLCR and PLCR, and do it without circular reference errors.
Construction and capex
The construction period drives the funding requirement. Lenders check the drawdown schedule against the EPC payment milestones, interest during construction, commitment fees, contingency and the debt to equity split. Sponsors seeking solar project capital often understate this period.
Reserves, tax and structure
Debt service reserve accounts, maintenance reserves, distribution lock-up tests, depreciation, tax losses and any incentive structure all change cash available for debt service. If the model ignores them, the lender's technical and model auditors will add them, and the debt shrinks.
The most common failure we see. A model sized on P50 production with a flat DSCR, a tenor that runs years past the PPA, and no downside cases. When the lender re-runs it on their own sizing case, the supportable debt can drop by a large share, and the sponsor discovers an equity gap late in the process. Fixing the model before outreach is far cheaper than reopening a term sheet.
Developer model vs lender-grade model
| Area | What lenders need to see |
|---|---|
| Energy yield | P50, P90 and P99 cases from an independent report, with the sizing case switchable in one cell rather than rebuilt by hand. |
| Revenue | Contracted PPA or tariff revenue separated from merchant revenue, with a documented price curve source and haircuts on the merchant tail. |
| Operating costs | O&M, asset management, land lease, insurance, grid charges and inverter or battery augmentation costs, all indexed and tied to signed or quoted contracts. |
| Debt | Sculpted repayment solving to a target DSCR, with tenor, margin, fees, hedging and reserve accounts modelled explicitly. |
| Sensitivities | Production, price, capex overrun, delay, opex and interest rate sensitivities with a clear summary of DSCR and equity IRR under each. |
| Integrity | Consistent formulas across rows, no hardcodes inside calculations, checks that balance, and a structure a third-party model auditor can follow. |
Technology-specific modelling issues
Utility-scale and C&I solar. Module degradation, inverter replacement timing, soiling and clipping losses, and curtailment in congested grid zones are the assumptions credit teams challenge most. For commercial and industrial rooftop portfolios, offtaker credit quality and contract termination payments matter as much as yield.
Onshore wind. Wind resource uncertainty is wider than solar, so the spread between P50 and P90 is larger and sizing on the wrong case has a bigger effect. Turbine availability guarantees, wake losses and long-term service agreement costs need to tie directly to the contracts.
Battery energy storage. Revenue often stacks capacity payments, ancillary services and energy arbitrage, much of it merchant. Lenders look for a contracted floor, a tolling agreement or a revenue swap, plus explicit modelling of cycling, state of health and augmentation capex. A storage model without a credible contracted layer will struggle to attract senior debt at meaningful leverage.
Hybrid and co-located projects. Shared grid connections create interaction effects between assets. The model has to allocate export capacity, losses and costs correctly, or the combined cash flow will not match what either asset can deliver alone.
How a Financely modelling engagement works
We start with a deal assessment. You submit the project through a paid quote request. Our team reviews the project, the current model if one exists, the contracts and the capital ask, then issues an estimate with scope, fee and delivery schedule. The USD 500 assessment fee is credited against the retainer if you proceed.
We build or rebuild the model to lender standard. Depending on where the project stands, that means a full new build from the yield report, EPC and PPA, or a structured review and repair of your existing model. Either way the output is a clean, auditable model with a sizing case, sculpted debt, reserve mechanics and a full sensitivity suite.
We tie the model to the credit story. A model on its own does not raise debt. We align it with the information memorandum, the risk matrix and the data room so that every number a lender sees has a source document behind it. You can see the full scope on our project finance advisory deliverables page.
We take it to market when you are ready. Once the model and credit package hold up, Financely can run lender outreach across our network of more than 12,700 verified lenders, compare term sheets and support you through financial close. Sponsors who want the credit file built first, without placement, can start with our fixed-fee Lender-Ready Package, which includes model review and debt sizing. Where the debt case needs extra support, we also advise on credit enhancement and independent debt underwriting.
Why this matters more in the current market
Capital is available, but it is getting more selective. BloombergNEF reported that renewable energy investment fell 9.5% to USD 690 billion in 2025, even as energy transition debt issuance rose 17% to USD 1.2 trillion (BloombergNEF, Energy Transition Investment Trends, 2026). Debt is doing more of the work, and debt providers underwrite to the model.
Access is also uneven. The International Energy Agency found that Africa accounts for only 2% of global clean energy investment despite being home to about a fifth of the world's population (IEA, World Energy Investment, 2025). For sponsors in emerging markets, a lender-grade model is often the difference between a DFI taking a meeting and a polite decline.
Get your renewable energy model ready for credit committee
Send us your project details, current model and capital requirement. We will assess the deal and issue an estimate covering scope, fee and delivery schedule for the modelling work and any wider capital raising support.
If you already have a model, include it. A review of an existing model is usually faster than a full build, and it shows us exactly where a lender is likely to push back.
Frequently asked questions
Do you build models from scratch or review existing ones?
Both. If you have a working model, we review it against lender requirements and repair it. If you only have a yield report, EPC quote and offtake terms, we build the full project finance model.
Which renewable technologies do you model?
Utility-scale and C&I solar, onshore wind, battery energy storage and hybrid projects, along with related infrastructure such as grid connections. Each model reflects the specific revenue and cost risks of the technology.
Will the model pass a lender's model audit?
We build to the standards independent model auditors apply, with consistent formulas, no hardcodes in calculations and integrity checks throughout. Final audit sign-off sits with the auditor the lender appoints, and no outcome is guaranteed.
How much does financial modelling cost?
It depends on the technology, the number of assets, the revenue structure and whether we build or review. Every engagement starts with a USD 500 deal assessment, which is credited against the retainer, and you receive a fixed one-off fee in the estimate.
Can Financely also raise the debt?
Yes. Financely is a debt advisory and arranging firm. Once the model and credit package are ready, we can run lender outreach, compare term sheets and support the transaction through financial close.
