Top 10 Turnkey Solar EPC Contractors by Region
Lenders do not finance solar panels. They finance a plant that will be built on time, on budget and to specification, and the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor is the party that makes that promise. A tier-one turnkey contractor with a fixed-price, date-certain contract can be the difference between a bankable project and one that never reaches financial close.
This guide lists the leading full-service solar EPC contractors worldwide and by region, using the most recent published rankings from Wiki-Solar, Solar Power World and Mercom. It also explains what lenders look for in an EPC package, so developers can choose a contractor that helps rather than hinders their financing.
In this article
What a turnkey solar EPC contractor does
A turnkey EPC contractor takes single-point responsibility for delivering a working plant. It designs the project, buys the modules, inverters, trackers and balance of system, builds and connects the plant, and hands it over once performance tests are passed. Many also offer operations and maintenance after commercial operation.
Engineering
Site layout, energy yield design, electrical design, grid connection studies and permitting support.
Procurement
Sourcing of modules, inverters, trackers, transformers and cabling, often with supplier warranties passed through to the owner.
Construction
Civil works, mechanical installation, substation and interconnection, commissioning and performance testing.
Handover and O&M
Performance guarantees, defects liability period and, where contracted, long-term operations and maintenance.
For developers raising debt, the EPC contract is one of the documents lenders read most closely, alongside the power purchase agreement and the financial model. Our solar project capital raising services include EPC contract review for exactly this reason.
Global top 10 solar EPC contractors
The Wiki-Solar Q4 2025 ranking measures cumulative utility-scale capacity built by each contractor, counting projects above 4 MWac. US firms hold the top two places, while Indian and Chinese contractors have been climbing steadily.
| Rank and contractor | Home market | Cumulative capacity (GWac) |
|---|---|---|
| 1. SOLV Energy | United States | 15.5 |
| 2. McCarthy Building | United States | 8.5 |
| 3. Larsen & Toubro | India | 7.2 |
| 4. Eiffage Energie Systèmes | France | 6.3 |
| 5. Equans (Bouygues) | France | 4.5 |
| 6. Sterling & Wilson | India | 4.5 |
| 7. Belectric (Elevion) | Germany | 4.4 |
| 8. First Solar | United States | 4.3 |
| 9. Mortenson | United States | 4.0 |
| 10. China Machinery Engineering Corporation | China | 3.8 |
Wiki-Solar notes that its database identifies the EPC contractor for only a minority of projects worldwide, so some contractors' real volumes, particularly in China, are higher than shown.
North America
The US market is led by large national contractors. The Solar Power World 2026 Top Utility Solar Contractors list ranks firms by utility-scale capacity installed during 2025.
| Rank and contractor | Headquarters | 2025 utility installs (GWdc, approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Quanta Services | Texas | 6.1 |
| 2. Moss | Florida | 4.2 |
| 3. McCarthy Building Companies | Missouri | 3.6 |
| 4. Primoris Renewable Energy | Colorado | 3.2 |
| 5. SOLV Energy | California | 2.5 |
| 6. Sun Solar LLC | Arizona | 1.8 |
| 7. Mortenson | Minnesota | 1.7 |
| 8. Granite Industrial | Texas | 1.4 |
| 9. Sukut Construction | California | 1.3 |
| 10. DEPCOM Power | Arizona | 1.2 |
Developers of smaller commercial and community solar projects will usually work with regional contractors rather than these national firms. Our guide to commercial solar project finance covers that segment.
Europe
European contractors still hold a large share of the global top tier. Ranked by cumulative capacity in the Wiki-Solar Q4 2025 data, the leading European turnkey contractors are as follows.
| Rank and contractor | Home market | Cumulative capacity (GWac) |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Eiffage Energie Systèmes | France | 6.3 |
| 2. Equans (Bouygues) | France | 4.5 |
| 3. Belectric (Elevion) | Germany | 4.4 |
| 4. juwi | Germany | 3.7 |
| 5. Cox Energy | Spain | 3.4 |
| 6. Enerparc | Germany | 3.3 |
| 7. Gransolar | Spain | 3.0 |
| 8. Vinci Energies | France | 2.9 |
| 9. Metlen (formerly Mytilineos) | Greece | 2.9 |
| 10. BayWa r.e. | Germany | 2.8 |
Spanish contractors such as Gransolar, Elecnor, Grupotec and TSK are also among the most active European firms on projects in Latin America, Australia and the Middle East.
India
India has a deep domestic EPC market. According to Mercom's India Solar Market Leaderboard 2026, the top five utility-scale EPC providers in 2025 were Tata Power Solar, Jakson Green, Sterling & Wilson, Amara Raja Infra and HARTEK, which together accounted for 64% of installations that year.
On cumulative capacity, the Wiki-Solar Q4 2025 ranking also places Larsen & Toubro (7.2 GWac), ACME Solar (3.8 GWac) and Mahindra (2.5 GWac) among the leading Indian contractors. Larsen & Toubro and Sterling & Wilson are the two Indian firms most active on large international projects.
China
Chinese state-owned contractors dominate large international tenders. In the Wiki-Solar Q4 2025 ranking, China Machinery Engineering Corporation leads with 3.8 GWac, followed by China Power Construction (3.0 GWac), PowerChina (2.7 GWac) and China Energy Engineering (2.3 GWac). These figures understate their domestic volumes, which are poorly captured in public data. Their competitive pricing, often combined with Chinese equipment supply and export credit, makes them frequent winners on large projects in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Middle East and Africa, Latin America and Australia
There is no published capacity ranking for these regions, so the contractors below are the turnkey firms that recent contract awards show are winning large projects there, rather than a measured top 10.
| Region | Leading turnkey contractors |
|---|---|
| Middle East and Africa | Larsen & Toubro, which won contracts for 1.8 GW of solar in Saudi Arabia; Shanghai Electric, appointed by ACWA Power for the Dubai solar park; PowerChina; China Energy Engineering; Sterling & Wilson; and Scatec, which develops and builds projects across Africa. |
| Latin America | Elecnor, which is building a 115 MW plant in Chile for EDF; OHLA, which has built utility-scale PV in Chile; Cox Energy; Gransolar; Acciona Energía; and Sterling & Wilson. |
| Australia | Gransolar, which has been expanding its Australian EPC business; Elecnor, with a second 137 MW Australian contract; Sterling & Wilson; Biosar; and Monford, which won the 260 MW Glenellen solar farm. |

What lenders look for in an EPC contract
A creditworthy contractor. Lenders want a contractor whose balance sheet, or parent company guarantee, can stand behind its obligations. A large name on the contract carries little weight if the contracting entity is a thinly capitalised local subsidiary.
Fixed price and date certain. Lump-sum pricing and a guaranteed completion date move construction risk away from the project company. Cost-plus or loosely defined schedules usually lead lenders to demand larger contingencies or more sponsor equity.
Meaningful liquidated damages. Delay and performance liquidated damages should be large enough to cover debt service during delays and lost revenue if the plant underperforms.
Security. Performance bonds, advance payment guarantees and retention give the project recourse if the contractor fails. Our page on completion guarantees for developers and sponsors explains how these instruments fit together.
A clean interface. Splitting supply and construction between several contractors creates gaps that lenders will price in. A single turnkey wrap is usually the most financeable option, even if it costs more.

Frequently asked questions
What is a turnkey solar EPC contractor?
A contractor that takes single-point responsibility for engineering, procurement and construction of a solar plant and hands it over ready to operate, usually with performance guarantees.
Who is the largest solar EPC contractor in the world?
On cumulative utility-scale capacity, SOLV Energy of the United States leads the Wiki-Solar Q4 2025 ranking with 15.5 GWac, followed by McCarthy Building and Larsen & Toubro.
Do I need a tier-one EPC contractor to get project finance?
Not always, but lenders need a contractor with the balance sheet, track record and security package to stand behind the build. Smaller contractors can be financeable with stronger bonds, parent guarantees or a higher contingency.
Is an EPC contract enough for lenders on its own?
No. Lenders also review the power purchase agreement, interconnection, land rights, permits, energy yield assessment and financial model before committing.
